Anaesthesiologists like Dr. Rowan Molnar believe that there is
much more to their role of providing pain relief and total care of patients
before, during and after surgery. The senior specialist anaesthetist is
dedicated to medical education at all levels. This includes the establishment,
deployment and implementation of simulation based teaching. As a former
Simulation Examiner - Maintenance of Certification in Anaesthesia at Harvard
Medical School and former Chairman of the Simulation Special Interest Group at
Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Dr Rowan Molnar has been at
the forefront of simulation-based training anaesthesiology training. According
to Dr. Rowan
Molnar Anaesthetist who has
taught Simulation at various organisations says “trainees no longer need to
rely on the apprenticeship model and spontaneous exposure to patient case in
order to deal with high-stakes situations and life-threatening events, where
the margin for error is small.”
Simulation-based
training
Australian Anaesthetist
Dr. Rowan
Molnar is among the early specialists to impart simulation-based
training, enacting real-life clinical events using imitation. In this type of
training, rare conditions can be imitated to offer trainees insight into
patient management prior to encountering these challenges in a clinical
setting. As a former Medical Education Director (Anaesthesia) at St.
Vincent’s Simulation Centre, Melbourne (Australia), he constantly researches to further optimize
simulation-based training in anaesthesiology. One of the objectives of this
type of training is also to alter a candidate’s perception of the value of
non-technical skills such as communication, which is vital during the management
of critical events in the operating room.
