Anaesthesiologists like Dr. Rowan
Molnar believe that their fraternity isn’t simply a team of hands-on
anaesthesia providers but true consultants as well. This is why many of them
are of the opinion that training physician anaesthesia training should be
expanded in scope and depth. For the most part, anaesthesia is now a safe, well
monitored and well administered procedure with a lot of tasks taken over by
various computers and equipment. However, it still needs the specialised talent
of the anaesthetist to ensure the success of any procedure. This is because
emergencies can occur and on-the-spot crucial decisions by the anaesthetist
must be taken alone.
Lay the foundation of
quality and safe clinical practice
According to Dr. Rowan Molnar, this must start with
training. The physician anaesthetist is one that must be looked at with respect
and as a person who can perform a specific life saving task that nobody else
can do. Gaining that experience and respect comes with the right training. Dr. Rowan Molnar who was formerly the Medical
Education Director (Anaesthesia) at St. Vincent’s Simulation Centre for 12
years, introduced and incorporated simulation as educational modality at St.
Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne, Australia). He developed courses to train a
large pool of instructors in the use of simulation, and also authored courses
for junior medical staff, specialist trainees and specialists in emergency
medicine, anaesthesia, cardiology, and general practice as well. With the right
simulation training, anaesthesiologists and anaesthesiology residents can
acquire sound technical, cognitive and behavioural skills that are essential
for maintaining quality and safe practice.
